This shop was founded by and named after John Sandoe in 1957, and it’s famous for its knowledgable staff, great recommendations and selection of unlisted, privately printed books. The staff are not just representatives of the shop – they are each avid readers with different interests and specialities, and together are capable of taking you through the best books they have in most genres.
The shop is based in an 18th century building that contains 25,000 books – they’re packed in rather tight. You’re encouraged to ask about the filing system, because it’s not readily apparent, but it’s best to ask the staff directly for a book you’re looking for, or recommendations if you don’t know what you’re after. It’s a great destination for bibliophiles, and if you’re looking for something you can’t find, they’ll do their best to get it for you. A truly helpful shop and just great for books.
