Based on two revolutionary plays by the German expressionist Ernst Toller – Transformation and Masses and Men – which were forerunners to Fritz Lang’s iconic 1927 science fiction film Metropolis.

Set in a dystopian world at the beginning of the twentieth century, Strange Land is a darkly comic musical about the young forced to take a stand against the infectious violence and greed of the old order. Leah, a seventeen-year-old Jewish girl, lives on the edge of a city stripped of young men, who have left to fight in a great war. Desperate to prove that she loves the Fatherland, she signs up as an army nurse. But it reveals itself to be no noble country, but a nightmare land.
